Service of process in Nevada is governed by NRCP Rule 4. Getting service right means: correct person, correct address, correct method, and a sworn affidavit formatted for the exact Nevada court where your case is filed. Here is the step-by-step process.
Identify Who Must Be Served
The named defendant or respondent. For businesses: registered agent, officer, director, or managing agent per NRS Chapter 14. Confirm current address before first attempt.
Confirm the Correct Court
In Clark County, determine the correct justice court township — Las Vegas, Henderson, or North Las Vegas. Each township has specific affidavit formatting requirements. Wrong township = rejected proof.
Attempt Personal Service
A person 18+ who is not a party physically delivers the documents to the named defendant. Document: exact date, time, address, description of person, and outcome.
Escalate to Substitute Service If Needed
After documented personal service attempts, leave with a person of suitable age and discretion at the dwelling AND mail a copy. NRCP Rule 4(d)(6)(B). Both steps documented.
Complete the Affidavit of Service
Server completes a sworn affidavit identifying: who was served, their relationship to the defendant, date/time/location, method of service, and server's certification under penalty of perjury.
File Proof With the Court
Affidavit filed with the exact Nevada court before your hearing date. In Clark County justice courts, this means the correct township precinct. Filing in the wrong court is treated the same as no filing.
