Jurisdiction & Service Requirements

Second Judicial District

Covers all of Washoe County — Reno, Sparks, Incline Village, and unincorporated areas. Service is governed by NRCP Rule 4 regardless of which Washoe city the defendant lives in.

Civil Matters Above $15,000

All civil claims above $15,000 must file in District Court. Misfiling in a justice court is dismissed. The monetary threshold is strictly enforced and applies to the amount in controversy at time of filing.

Family Court Division

All divorce, legal separation, annulment, custody, child support, and paternity matters. Personal service on the respondent is required before any family court hearing proceeds.

Probate & Guardianship

Estate administration, guardianship proceedings, and conservatorship. Service on heirs, interested parties, and wards follows specific NRCP and NRS probate code requirements.

Post-Judgment Service

Garnishment orders, writs of execution, and orders in aid of judgment all require service documented under the same NRCP Rule 4 standards as original process.

Alternative Service Orders

After documented diligent search failures, District Court may authorize service by publication or other means. Full diligence documentation package built for every alternative service motion.
