Arizona law does not specify a minimum number of attempts. Instead, the standard is "reasonable diligence" — a factual determination courts make based on the quality and variety of attempts, not just the count.
Courts expect attempts at different times of day and on different days of the week — not three visits at 10am on the same day. Varied timing shows genuine effort.
If a home address fails, attempts at workplace, known relatives' addresses, or other locations the defendant frequents strengthen the diligence record.
Every attempt must be logged with date, time, location, what was observed (lights on, car in driveway, who was contacted). Quantity of documentation matters as much as quantity of attempts.
While not codified, most Arizona courts expect to see at least 3–6 documented attempts before granting a motion for alternative service. Some judges require more.
