What Is Alternative Service in Arizona?

Alternative service in Arizona is court-authorized service by non-traditional means — including publication, email, or social media — when all standard service methods have failed after diligent effort.

Court-authorized methods

Types of Alternative Service

  • Service by Publication

Publishing a notice in a court-approved newspaper for a set period. Requires court order and proof of diligent search for the defendant's address.

  • Service by Email

Arizona courts can authorize service by email or another alternative method under Rule 4.1 when the address is confirmed and the defendant has used it in the litigation. It is granted case by case, not as a matter of course.

  • Service by Social Media

In exceptional cases, courts have authorized service via verified social media accounts when that is the only confirmed contact point for the defendant.

  • Posting at Address

Posting documents at the defendant's last known address combined with mailing, in cases where no one is ever home after documented extensive attempts.
