Los Angeles, California
The city of Los Angeles is not the county, and its addresses span downtown towers, hillside gated streets, and the San Fernando Valley. Service method and court district both follow the address.
Assignment basics
Nothing here guarantees a service outcome; results depend on the defendant, the address, and the court's requirements.
Jurisdiction
California’s statutory methods apply, and the proof is executed under section 417.10.
Who may serve. A sheriff or marshal, or any person over eighteen who is not a party. Registered process servers are the commercial standard under Business and Professions Code section 22350.
Method. Personal delivery under CCP 415.10. Substituted service under 415.20 requires leaving a copy at the dwelling or usual place of business and mailing a copy, and it depends on the attempts that came before.
Court district. Los Angeles Superior Court hears every case in the county across multiple district courthouses. The filing district depends on case type and location, and the proof is prepared for that district.
City boundaries inside the county
West Hollywood, Beverly Hills, Santa Monica, and Culver City are separate cities surrounded by Los Angeles. A Los Angeles mailing address does not always mean the city limits.Execution
Access, distance, and documentation are planned together before the first attempt.
Case details, defendant information, service address, and documents are captured in one request.
The assignment is matched to the venue, county, and precinct responsible for that address.
Each attempt is recorded: date, time, address description, access conditions, and contact outcome.
Where personal service fails, substitute service or a diligence record for alternative service is prepared.
When service is completed, a signed, sworn affidavit of service documents the applicable recipient, date, time, location and method of service. When service is unsuccessful, a signed, sworn affidavit of non-service or due diligence documents the attempts, circumstances, findings and unsuccessful outcome. Both are executed under penalty of perjury and prepared in accordance with the applicable jurisdiction's execution and filing requirements.
Coverage
Downtown, the Westside, the Valley, and the Harbor each behave differently.
Inside the city
Local considerations
Access, identity, and timing are what separate a completed service from a documented attempt.
Downtown and Century City towers require lobby clearance and often a tenant escort. Refusals at a security desk are recorded as facts.
Gated streets and narrow canyon roads can make an address unreachable by vehicle. Access attempts and their outcomes are documented.
The Valley to the Harbor is a long drive in traffic. Attempts are sequenced by geography rather than by the order documents arrived.
Substituted service adds a mailing that starts the response clock. The mailing date and address are documented.
Documents
Each category is executed with the method the governing rule allows.
Service options
Standard, rush, or emergency coordination — same documentation standard.
Documented multi-attempt service with a filing-ready affidavit.
Priority dispatch and accelerated attempt scheduling.
Immediate coordination for time-critical court deadlines.
Dispatch timing does not guarantee completion. Completion depends on defendant access, address conditions, and the requirements of the issuing court. How pricing is determined
