Substitute service in Arizona is a legally valid method of serving process when the defendant cannot be reached personally after reasonable attempts. It involves leaving papers with another person and following up by mail.
Arizona Rule 4.1(d)
Requirements
Under Arizona Rule 4.1(d), substitute service requires leaving copies with a person of suitable age and discretion at the defendant's dwelling or usual place of abode.
The Mailing Requirement
After leaving the documents, the process server must also mail a copy to the defendant's last known address. Service is complete when both steps are done.
Who Qualifies as "Suitable"
Typically an adult (18+) residing at the address. A minor or visitor generally does not qualify. The server uses professional judgment about the person's reliability.
Documentation Required
The server must document: who they left the papers with, that person's approximate age and description, the date/time of delivery, and the date of mailing.
